Cursor

AI-first code editor

Cursor is a code editor built around AI pair-programming. It's essentially VS Code with the AI features baked directly into the core — chat, inline edits, multi-file composer, agent mode, and autocomplete. If you've used VS Code, you already know how to use Cursor. Your extensions, settings, and keybindings carry over.

Best for

Developers who want AI features built into their editor instead of bolted on as a plugin.

Why I Recommend It

Model flexibility. Use cloud models like Claude and GPT, or point Cursor at your own local models via Ollama or a custom endpoint. The local setup takes some tinkering but works.

It's a drop-in replacement for VS Code. Your extensions, settings, and keybindings all carry over on day one.

The AI features feel integrated, not bolted on. Tab completion, multi-file composer, and agent mode all feel native to the editor.

It's the editor I've been using the longest out of the AI-first ones, so the muscle memory and workflows have actually stuck.

Things to Know

Cloud models require a paid plan for serious use — Pro is around $20/month.

Using local models works but isn't the default path — expect some setup.

It's a closed-source product built on top of open-source VS Code.

Good fit if…

  • You already use VS Code and want AI baked into the editor.
  • You want to experiment with different AI models from one place.
  • You want the option to mix cloud and local models.

Not a great fit if…

  • You need a strictly open-source editor.
  • You prefer JetBrains IDEs or terminal-based editors like Neovim.
